ANC 2008 Austin City Council Candidate Endorsements

On Wednesday evening, March 26th, the Austin Neighborhoods Council (ANC) and its membership had the opportunity to engage nine thoughtful City Council candidates in a discussion of the city's future. ANC set the bar high for its 2008 City Council endorsements requiring that a candidate earn at least two-thirds of the membership's vote at the endorsement meeting. ANC's questions were tough and the candidates met the challenge.

Following are the candidates who participated in the ANC forum:

Place 1 - Allen Demling, Lee Leffingwell, and Jason Meeker

Place 3 - Jennifer Kim, Randi Shade, and Ken Weiss

Place 4 - Robin Cravey, Cid Galindo, and Laura Morrison

ANC deeply respects the dedication to public service represented by their participation in ANC's endorsement process. They are all worthy candidates and ANC will be pleased to work with any of them on the City Council.

ANC's endorsements and supporting statements in the June 14, 2008 Place 4 runoff City Council race is as follows:

PLACE 4 - LAURA MORRISON

Laura Morrison garnered a unanimous endorsement from ANC. She demonstrates a vast knowledge and grasp of the intricacies of city government. Her record of bringing together disparate stake-holders and building consensus-based solutions will serve Austin well throughout the broad range of challenges that face the community.

Videos from the forum can be viewed on the About ANC page.

Call for Action to Manage Austin's Growth

On July 25, 2007 the Austin Neighborhoods Council approved a resolution for a Call for Action to Manage Austin’s Growth. The lack of the necessary city policies to ensure the vibrancy and the cultural vitality of Austin as we move into the future is a most serious concern among the 71 Neighborhood Association members of ANC.

A spontaneous movement to address this situation began among our members last May and has culminated to produce the Call for Action.  Dozens of neighborhood leaders have forged the document in six meetings. The resolution passed unanimously at our July 25th General Membership meeting.

ANC looks forward to working with the City Council and the rest of the Austin community in creating appropriate policies in the near future.
